Spam is and e-mail that is massively sent out. Usually one computer will send out hundreds (if not
thousands) of e-mails to any random addesses. They can be sent to any random name to any well known e-mail address (Example:
random@yahoo.com, person@hotmail.com, etc). They can be quite annoying and sometimes they can carry a virus. Below I have
removal instructions and ways to block them.
As stated above some spam may carry viruses, others just carry an advertisement to view their site...
But how can you tell what's good and what's bad... How do you stop them? I have some tips below to help you with these various
questions:
- Only open e-mails sent from people you know.
- If you see an advertisement immediately delete the e-mail.
- Microsoft will NEVER e-mail you about ANYTHING
- Even if an e-mail says your name, it can STILL be spam.
Some e-mail programs have a "Spam Box" or an option to block an address.
I personally use Yahoo! Mail, and find it quite easy to use, it even
comes with a free "Spam Box" to block annoying e-mails. To block an address is hard to explain. Try some of the following steps:
- Right click the e-mail and see if you can find "Ignore" or "Block" address.
highlight an e-mail and then choose Tools (or Options).
(Note: It is very hard for me to explain how to do these when there are lots e-mail clients all with various options. I will
try my hardest to find programs to sort out your e-mail automatically [these do exist]).
Prevention of Spam is nearly impossible. I do have a few things that can help you to receive less, but
it's very unlikely that you can stop all spam e-mails.
- If you notice a spam e-mail, do not open it. Immediately delete and block all spam e-mails you receive.
- When signing up to a site, forum, mailing list; try using a "disposable e-mail address".
A "Disposable e-mail address" is an address that is something other then your main address. Like creating
a secondary address just for this type of occassion. With this you have your own personal mailbox, and another that may or may not
get sent extra spam mail. This happens because some sites will send out spam mail along with mail you request.
